BioTreks follows and annual publication cycle, which begins by schools and students registering to draft and present their manuscripts at an online peer-review conference in April. Following the conference, authors revise their manuscripts and work with editors to prepare them for publication in an October issue of the journal. The following table gives a more detailed breakdown of these events as they will unfold during the 2017 publication cycle.
|Monday, 12 December 2016||Open high school registration. High school teachers and team mentors will be invited to register their teams for the 2017 BioTreks event|
|Friday, 13 January 2017||Close high school registration.Registration will close for new high school teams.|
|Monday, 16 January 2017||Open student registration. Students will have an opportunity to register with BioTreks and select the team that they’re associated with.|
|Friday, 17 February 2017||Close student registration. This will be the last day for students to register to participate in the 2017 BioTreks event.|
|Friday, 17 March 2017||Student permission slips due. We require a signed Parent Permission Form from each of the students indicating that their parents understand the conference and publication process and are on-board with it.
Abstracts due. High school teams will need to submit a title and abstract for the papers and artwork they plan to present at the April BioTreks conference.
|Monday, 20 March 2017||Breezio open to students. This is when students can log onto Breezio and start drafting their papers. At the start, the papers are only visible to team members so that they can do most of the drafting in private.|
|Saturday, 22 April 2017||Manuscripts available to the public. Students will be encouraged to have their papers reader-ready by this date when everyone with access to the Breezio platform will be able to see them and comment on them.|
|Saturday 29 April 2017 11 AM – 1 PM ET.||Conference. Even though the student manuscripts are available for review and edit prior to and after this date, the conference provides a focused period in time when everyone will be online and available for real-time discussion. |Friday, 2 June 2017||Final drafts due. This is the point at which manuscripts will be locked to students and the judges will be called upon to complete their final review of the student papers. Students and judges will have had the entire month of May to exchange comments and implement edits prior to the lockdown. This deadline will ensure that the papers are ready for copy-edit prior to the summer break.|
|Friday, 9 June 2017||Judging forms due. The judges will submit their reviews of student work, taking into account the qualities of their month-long dialog with the students and final draft of the manuscript.|
|Monday, 19 June 2017||Award and publication decisions announced. Judging forms will be used to award badges to manuscripts and make a final determination as to which manuscripts are fit for publication. Although, we strive to publish as many of the manuscripts as possible in the journal, we recognize that a few may not be complete or ready for publication in the current cycle.|
|Monday, 4 September 2017||Galley proofs released. Students will be given an opportunity to review and make final corrections to the proofs before publication.|
|Friday, 15 September 2017.||Galley proofs due. Students will be need to return any final edits to their galley proofs by this date.|
|Monday, 16 October 2017||2017 BioTreks Issue published online.|
